Chapter 19 and its attendant problems may also be viewed HERE with some word beans coming out of faces and explaining what's supposed to be happening in case the visuals don't quite do the job.
I quite like this strip, actually, as Dredd almost looks the same from one panel to the next. Inking, though? All over the place. I tried to use solid blacks sparingly on Dredd to emphasise him as being visually different from the Dredd imposter, and he only got inked with solid blacks when he was the only Dredd in the panel and/or when being angry badass Dredd, but I don't think it really came off in the end. That last panel was originally just Dredd's chin jutting down from the top of the panel, but it looked stupid so I agreed to change it.
And so to the end of the Daily Dredd adventure. Of the 60 panels drawn in this strip, I was happy with 18 of them.

Science is my pie
Chapter 17 may be read HERE, though Dredd's hand is still wonky in the lettered version.
You will note that I struggle so much at drawing in the space available that things often pop out of panels, and that I continue to try drawing things in triangle-y ways.
Chapter 18 may be read HERE. I really wished I'd left some of those SFX to Dave.

Big Bob's in the back and I think it's Hug O'Clock
Chapter 8 with its laissez faire approach to continuity and sequential storytelling may be read HERE.

Chapter 9 - including wonky crab-like hands for which the window of opportunity to make a Jeremy Beadle reference that remains topical is fading with every passing day thanks to the relentless march of time - can be read HERE. Say what you like about Beadle, but he didn't trade in mean-spirited humor, did a lot for charity, and he wasn't a nonce.
Chapter 10 can be read HERE, though fair warning the characters in the lettered version are still stick figures. Still struggling with drawing what I want at this size and resolution...
Chapter 11 and attendant ill-advised attempts at both high and low angles can be read HERE.
Chapter 12 in which I misjudge the tone as slapstick comedy can be read HERE.
Chapter 13 where I try and fail to create a tangible visual reference to the film by getting the characters pointing the wrong way and then forget to draw pavements can be read HERE. In my defence, I did at least manage to replicate the visual effect in the film of Karl Urban's face being eaten by the helmet.
Chapter 14 where I go super-original with a picture of Dredd pointing a gun at the reader that has clearly been the result of poor visual research can be found HERE.
Chapter 15 was described thusly: "I have no idea what is going on" by the guy that wrote it and can be read HERE.

Oh good, you found the vodka
Chapter 5 can be read HERE. Note the absence of any kind of traffic in panel 2, as around this point I was becoming aware that between the resolution and the need for dialogue balloons, it might not be a great idea to add too much visual clutter that wouldn't be discerned in the final strips. As it is, I kept things simple but still think the background in this panel just looks like a bunch of lines anyway. I considered doing the traffic behind a full-body pose of Dredd standing up and looking tough in the final panel, but thought better of it in the end because that would just shift the potential problems of panel two into panel three, so in the end there's not much of a sense of where Dredd is at this point - remember he is supposed to be in the middle of speeding traffic - and I find myself committing an art crime I always notice in other people's comics where you get one establishing panel near the very start and then the art cruises for the rest of the scene with few - if any - background shots. I did like panel one, I guess, but it looks half-finished around the edges.
Chapter six can be read HERE, and suffers from similar problems, although this time the lack of any sense of where the story is taking place is mandated by the script, as at this point it's just a hidden base somewhere or other. I do get draw the actual physical location of the base in a later strip, but - SPOILER - I fuck that up as well.
I had a brainwave at this point in chapter 7 - which can be read HERE - that if I wanted to avoid Dredd and Hershey just being talking heads or stick figures in this strip, I should combine a couple of panels for a panning shot across Hershey's office as this would render both panels in the script, but also get me a larger single panel to use as an establishing shot rather than one single cluttered or unclear panel with Hershey, Dredd, and Hershey's office crammed in on one side of the strip. This did constrain me a little in terms of where the characters would be in the shot, obviously, as apart from all the empty space at the top of panels that would be necessary to avoid plastering lettering over characters (which I don't like to see), Hershey speaks first in the script, so the eventual placement of speech balloons would dictate that Hershey needs to go on the left in the first panel, and Dredd has all the dialogue in panel 2, so he'd have to be the focus there, which is why the window is at a silly angle it doesn't need to be in order to draw the eye towards him - or towards the city he's looking at, as I'm a little unsure of what the effect is, to be honest. I try the same combining-panels trick in the next strip, but that doesn't turn out so well, either.

Watches are a confidence trick invented by the Swiss
The original can be read HERE. Note how I use solid blacks to avoid doing any work - erm, I mean major detail on the Dredd jimp in panel one, though I think the solid blacks help it as the pacing on this as an action scene is off for me, as it feels like there's just so little energy across the panels, prompting me to not draw any city detail in the background of the last panel so that it's just these basic triangular shapes drawing your eye in the relevant directions. It doesn't really salvage it, in my opinion, and I probably should have kept the speed lines in panel 1, ironically the one thing I didn't refuse to change.
I like to think there's a charm in seeing Dredd chased by a guy on a lawnmower, though.

Compared to the rest of the third world we're doing just fine
Wanted to wait until this went up elsewhere before posting, but in association with Zarjaz and to celebrate the birth of Santa, the release of the Shako trade collection and IDW's US format Dredd monthly, here's Judge Dredd fighting a bear.
If you fancy reading it via a Borg distribution node or tablet, it's also available on PDF and CBR.

I don't mean to be judgey but this is the kind of thing lunatics do.
Just today finished my read-through of John Allison's Scary Go Round, and a fine read while it lasted it was, too, even if coming at it backwards after Bad Machinery just bummed me out at the end as we never did get to see what became of Des Fishman, Comrade Bat or Dark Esther. Quietly moving in some places, be it the sad and horrible deaths-by-fire of Natalie and Rachael, or the stiff upper lippedness of the ends of the affairs of various characters as they graduate from the strip in it's dying days.
If you are not a dinysaur who needs things in his hands before you will read them and have finally joined the rest of us here in the terrible world of the future, I highly recommend it, if only to see Allison's work mature in front of your eyes as the pages go by. Plus next year Oni Press starts collecting Bad Machinery so it's probably worth checking out before it blows up huge and you're SO SICK OF THE BLOODY SIGHT OF IT YOU WILL NEVER ENJOY IT AGAIN.

My real name isn't Angel Dynamite
Whoopsy daisy forgetting to post again.
Anyway, still drawing Dredd, still finding I only make headway when I get out of bed and sit down and work - I swear, it's almost like there is some sort of connection between not staying in bed playing videogames and actually getting something done.
If I had posted last week, I would likely have posted a link to the shitstorm in a teacup that was comics genius Grant Morrison writing a snide, itemised, meticulously researched 5000 word response to an internet article.
So now we know - when you read something that is incorrect on the internet, don't just go about your day like ONE OF THEM, sit down, decide on an editorial direction for your response, then throw obsessively-collated facts at each and every sentence of the article and sign off by saying that you're in no way bothered by what the article was saying - because that's how genius rolls.

Get back here, you backwards hill-people - there is evidence in that shark!
Didn't get much done today as I crawled out of the kipper at a disgraceful 2:30, the consequence of being actual proper unemployed now instead of just having a lot of free time in my afternoons, though I did manage some bad inking on a terrible design for a robot that I'm sadly locked into it as he appeared in a book that saw print about five years ago.
The first Dredd trailer hit today, and being an action movie snob - yes, there are such things - I found it looked generic and more than a little dumb, but that's what all trailers look like these days so there's no point slagging it this early, especially since there's a glimpse of the odd bit of potential even if "this future-drug makes things happen IN SLOW MOTION" is just begging to be laughed at in its stupid ten-years-too-late-to-be-satire face.
Although it's worth saying that the Hall Of Justice looks like some sort of rad nightclub.

We're making a lot of cash with this thing and I need money for bourbon and anime

Reading: Slaughterhouse 5, which I have finally finished after probably a year or so, which is a pretty poor showing for such a short book. My general impression is that of the philistine, wondering "what was that?" and thinking if I was John Lithgow in that film, I'd probably have let those biddies burn all the copies and then just got Lady Chatterly's Lover for the school library instead. See, I'm thinking practically here: kids only did all that 1980s dancing as a prelude to fucking, so if you want to ban dancing among your kids, just get them fucking as quickly as possible. If they're in their bedrooms they can't be getting run over by tractors or whatever was up Lithgow's ass about his dead kid, but worst case scenario is the kids all get pregnant or contract AIDS - either way their social life becomes a lot less hectic and they'll be safe indoors.

He tried to blackmail the city and he got caught by his own weapon - caught cold!
Because it wouldn't be a real day's attempt at work without it:

Got tired of drawing teenage Asians standing around talking so I'd have something for the obligatory daily post, so instead today went for a quick entry for the 2000ad forum's art compo. Haven't drawn Dredd much in the last few years since I've tried to learn the comic craft, in fact I think my only deliberate attempt at a Dredd I gave up on after the first page on account of how horrid it was.
Anyway, Dredd, Shako and a random background dropped in from something else I was drawing (free time: I has not a lot of it) go Bear Cavalry on the Sovs Big Meg style:

And yes, I'm aware he doesn't look very polar bear-ish - what do you want at this time of the morning? If I had the time, there would be disco in this picture, but here we are.
